Interview
1. Independence suits you, Edwin. Major labels have advantages, but so do the smaller independent ones. What are you looking forward to with this new label?
I'm looking forward to having some control, and also looking forward to making some money, rather than being an indentured servant to 'the man'. I am also looking forward to having some control over my image, and the way that I'm presented, which has never been accurate in the past. But most of all I am looking forward to performing and playing the kind of music I want to play when I feel like playing it.
2. In browsing some of your fan-sites on the Internet, I've noticed that you have a strong core group of fans. I know you prefer to call them friends, and in that sense, what's the best thing your friends can do to promote you and your music?
The best thing anyone can do is share the music with the people they know and turn them on to it, bring them out to shows, and have them be a part of this family that follows the music.
3. Do you think you would have taken a different direction musically if you had grown up in Los Angeles as opposed to SC?
If I grew up in LA, I probably wouldn't be playing music at all. The scene out there is so cut throat and so nonmusical that I don't think I would have pursued a career. I probably would have been an accountant or something. There are no places to play and it's so cut throat that you can't make a living at an intermediate level like we did for a while.
4. Is there a musician you haven't worked with before that you would like to?
Seal
5. Since you're a fan of Kiss, would you ever consider performing a KISS song at your show?
No, because I think Kiss should do Kiss songs.
6. Sometimes you seem to lose yourself in your music when you are on stage. Are you really lost in the feel of the music, or are you thinking about the Waffle House?
I'm not thinking about Waffle House, I'm actually thinking about the music in the Waffle House jukebox!
7. If you could ask anyone over for dinner, who would it be?
Ernest Hemingway.
